Dan Fogelberg Musical launches Kickstarter on August 13
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (August 12, 2013) – Part of the Plan, a new original musical using the music and lyrics of the late, celebrated singer-songwriter, Dan Fogelberg, turns to Kickstarter on the musician’s birthday, August 13, to finance a staged reading and a workshop. The goal of the campaign is to raise at least $50,000 in 30 days. To donate, go to http://goo.gl/KMTK2Q
Part of the Plan tells the tale of an adopted boy and the teenaged girl of privilege who is forced to give him up. The fictional story – written by Kate Atkinson, a writer and producer of independent film and stage, and Karen Harris, an Emmy-Award winning writer and producer – spans the boom times of post-World War II America, the social and sexual revolution of the 1960’s, and the political upheaval of the 1970’s. Victor Vanacore, a Grammy award-winning arranger, composer, and musical director, will arrange Fogelberg’s songs for the stage.
Atkinson and Harris are embarking on this stage of development to draw the attention of noted producers and regional theatres as a doorway to Broadway. “We knew that the richness of Dan’s music and lyrics would be a powerful and emotional foundation for our story,” says Atkinson. “There are millions of Fogelberg fans. The many we have heard from have been incredibly enthusiastic and supportive. Between Dan’s fans and our friends in film and television, Kickstarter became the most organic way to proceed,” adds Harris.
Donations to the Part of the Plan Kickstarter campaign will cover all costs associated with mounting a staged reading and workshop, including:
- musical arrangements
- director, choreographer, and talent fees
- production elements (lighting, sound, stage craft, etc.)
- theatre and facilities for rehearsals and performances
Part of the Plan’s Kickstarter campaign will run through September 12, 2013.

Dan Fogelberg (Music & Lyrics)

Born in 1951 in Peoria, Illinois, premiere American singer/songwriter and composer, Dan Fogelberg recorded and released “Home Free,” his first album, in 1972 with famed Muscle Shoals producer Norbert Putnam. In 1974, Dan released his second album, “Souvenirs” with producer Joe Walsh, resulting in his first hit single, "Part of the Plan."
Over the next thirty years, Dan established a worldwide following of faithful fans, who eagerly awaited his next new album. Between 1972 and 2003, Dan delivered 13 studio albums, two live albums, two greatest hits albums and a 4-CD box set, writing 99% of the songs and playing many or all the instruments himself. His albums generated 21 hit singles, four of which were #1 hits and eight more were in the Top 10.
While his later songs would tackle political, spiritual and environmental issues, Dan may be most admired for the stories he wove of love, loss, and everyday life. His many fans declare that his music represents the soundtrack of their lives. "Same Old Lang Syne," inspired by a chance encounter with a former girlfriend, has become a winter holiday standard. "Leader of the Band," an emotional tribute to his father, has been embraced by generations of sons and daughters. And his greatest hit, "Longer," has been adopted as a beloved wedding song for decades.
Sadly, in May of 2004, Dan was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. He fought valiantly, but ultimately lost his battle, dying on December 16, 2007 at home in Deer Isle, Maine, his wife Jean at his side.
Dan’s music is his legacy, and his legacy lives on.
